Geology & Landforms
Shallows of seas once covered the flat countryside about 1.6 billion years ago. Layers and layers of sand, clay, and calcite were deposited and compressed for millions of years. The mountains in Glacier National Park are the result of what geologists call the Lewis Overthrust Fault. 2 tectonic plates began colliding 170 million years ago. Another millions of years of geologic uplifting eventually formed the Rocky Mountains. A huge section of earth cracked about 75 million years ago. A giant rock wedge many miles thick and several hundred miles long. It lifted and slid eastward about 50 miles(80km). The water in the sea formated millions of years ago.
